A general assembly and welcome party for international students was held last Saturday afternoon, June 11, at the Theodore Buttenbruch Hall, Main Campus. The event was successfully organized by the officers of the USC International Students Association for AY 2009-2010 in cooperation with the Office of External Affairs, Office of the University Registrar and the Office of Student Affairs.
Fr. President Dionisio Miranda formally welcomed all international students who are enrolled in the University’s different academic programs. Fr. Louie Punzalan, Coordinator for International Students, outlined the program of activities for the school year and encouraged active participation by everyone. Paul Ole Sikamoi, a 3rd year Kenyan Pharmacy student and President of the USC International Students Association, delivered the closing remarks.
One hundred ninety-one international students are enrolled in the University for the First Semester, AY 2009-2010. There are 95 Koreans, 36 Kenyans, 15 Iranians, 9 Americans, 8 Mainland Chinese, 6 Japanese, 3 Canadians, 3 Indonesians, 3 Timorese, 2 Germans, 2 Malaysians, 2 Marshallese, 1 Indian, 1 Micronesian, 1 Nepalese, 1 Pakistani, 1 Spanish, 1 Swedish, 1 Thai and 1 Vietnamese.

The results of the June 2009 Pharmacist Licensure examination has just been released by Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). Graduates of the University of the Philippines and the University of Santo Tomas topped the exam. A graduate from the University of San Carlos, placed 10th.

Cebuano Studies Center new books!
The Cebuano Studies Center, located at the USC Main Campus library released this report. The Cebuano Studies Center has just launched three new titles: A Dictionary of Bisayan Arts, Kulokabildo, and Sugilanong Sugboanon.
The Dictionary, compiled by CSC director Erlinda Alburo, collects indigenous terms in three Bisayan languages – Cebuano, Hiligaynon and Waray – in several sections: Art Criticism, Architecture and Boat-building, Ceramics, Crafts and Materials, Entertainment Arts (with Ritual), Language Arts (Communication and Literature) and Visual Arts. Produced with a research grant from the Toyota Foundation of Japan and published through a grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, it is an expanded version of the Dictionary of Cebuano Arts published in 2006.
Kulokabildo: Conversations with Cebuano Writers is edited by Literature professor Hope Yu and is a sequel to the first volume of interviews, Kapulongan, that came out in 2008. Like the first volume, the book is accompanied by a CD with excerpts from the interviews.
Sugilanong Sugboanon: Cebuano Fiction until 1940 carries 11 short stories and two excerpts from novels, edited and translated into English by Erlinda Alburo, Simeon Dumdum Jr., Vicente Bandillo Jr., and Resil Mojares, with help from Ester Tapia and the late Lina Espina-Moore. Resil Mojares wrote the critical introduction. The book was produced with funding from the Toyota Foundation of Japan, and published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press. A second volume of Cebuano fiction until 1998 will come out this year, also by the Ateneo press.

That the present period is a critical time in history is no longer a cliché but a sobering warning. Because the primary economic engine that is America has stumbled, the rest of the world is scrambling to adjust. Government reassurances notwithstanding, the Philippines is not immune from contagion; in fact unsettling evidence of the impact is already being noted at regional and province levels.
In Cebu City some of our own stakeholders have already manifested their apprehensions about possible tuition fee adjustments. As demanded by CHED and due process, and after consultation, we are now issuing the following announcement.
The USC administration, College Faculty Association (CFA) and the Administrative Employees Association (ADEA) have jointly agreed that for Academic Year 2009-2010, ALL FEES in ALL departments shall be MAINTAINED at their 2008-2009 levels.
Although this common decision is dictated by the global economic crisis, it is also the product of discernment in the spirit of our vocation as Christian educators. It aims to help new and continuing students of USC and their families to cope with the times even as they seek education in our institution.
Rest assured that the Administration shall partner with CFA and ADEA to look for ways to help faculty and staff to lighten the sacrifices they have graciously assumed to help others cope with the economic difficulties we all face today.
We invite each member of the USC academic and student communities to be more proactive in helping to cut expenses in our operations. An obvious start is avoiding wastage of or economizing on electricity and school materials. Thank you all for the goodwill shown so far; thank you in advance as well for the cooperation awaited in the future.

Following the directive of CHED Chairman Emmanuel Angeles, classes will start on June 15. This is to give enough time for students who came from abroad for self quarantine, along with other reasons.
This applies to all levels. The academic calendar will be adjusted accordingly. The first semester for Collegiate level will end on October 17 instead of October 10.
Adjustment for College enrollment shall continue according to the following schedule:
June 8 to June 13 (until 4:45 p.m.) - for undergraduate students
June 15 to June 20 (until 12:00 noon) - for graduate students
Any requests related to enrollment, such as request for waiver for violation of sequence of subjects, overload, and others, will no longer be entertained after the deadline.

Two Carolinians among the "Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) in Region VII
Carolinian students Miguel Antonio Garcia (Economics) and Stephen Alexeus Baltazar (Accountancy) were chosen as among the awardees of the "Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) in Region VII."

Garcia graduated Summa Cum Laude with a grade point average of 1.07 in Bachelor of Arts Major in Economics (Statistics Track Program) last March 2009. While in college, he was always a dean’s lister, first in rank in Arts Division of the College of Arts and Sciences thereby making him a consistent scholar from 2005 to 2009 aside from the Claude M. Wilson Scholarship Program of Rhine Marketing Corporation that he received.
Baltazar, on the other hand, finished his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy as Cum Laude in March 2009. As a college student, he too received several awards and recognition. Foremost are: The Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines Region VII- Central Visayas, Special Awards in Leadership and Exemplary Achievement (cum laude, SGV and Co. Leadership Award, Isla Lipana and Co. Leadership Award, Punongbayan and Araullo Medal for Exemplary Achievements as an Accounting Student), USC The Outstanding Graduate 2009, The Most Outstanding JPIAn 2008 and many others.

May 2009 Civil Engineering board exam results -- Top 10
A total of 1,199 out of 2,744 examinees passed the 2009 Civil Engineering Licensure Examinations, the Professional Regulation Commission announced today.
Four made it to the top spot namely Man Wai Lue Chua of De La Salle University (DLSU)-Manila, Alberto Palmares Olidan of the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP)-Quezon City, Sean Bryner Solis Rey of the Far Eastern University-East Asia College and Michael Geovil Landicho Rovero of the Mapua Institute of Technology, who all got a grade of 96.50 per cent.
Danilo Granilo Romero Jr. of University of San Carlos and Alvin Christopher Galang Varquez of DLSU tied at the No. 2 spot with a grade of 95.80 percent.
Finishing No. 3 is Homer Tomurong Sadie of the University of the Philippines-Diliman who got a grade of 95.45 percent followed by Allan Lucel Ramos Barit of Isabela State University, (95 percent); Cleo Vann Lachica Cedeño, Cebu Institute of Technology; Demi Mark Vinluan De Guzman, UP Diliman and Richard Iso Ygat of TIP, who all got a grade of 94.90 percent.

RIP: Fr. Romeo P. Bancale, SVD
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Romeo P. Bancale, SVD. Fr. Bancale passed away last Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009.
He was the Vice-President for Academic Affairs of Holy Name University, Tagbilaran Bohol. He was also the former VPAA of USC.
His remains were flown from Tagbilaran to Manila on Saturday, April 18, 2009. Interment will be on Monday, April 20, 2009 at 3:00 pm, Christ the King Seminary, Quezon City.

"Iskolar ng Sun Life" scholarship grants, available
USC announced: Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation, Inc. and Sun Life Financial announce the availability of two (2) slots under the 'Iskolar ng Sun Life' scholarship grant for INCOMING 3rd YEAR STUDENTS effective 1st semester, for SY 2009-2010. The scholarship grants consist of full tuition and matriculation, book allowance, monthly stipend. Applicants must be incoming juniors in the following courses:
* BS Biology
* BS Marine Biology
Benefits of the grant:
School Fees - as specified in the curriculum not to exceed P 15,000 per semester per scholar

The chairman of the Accountancy Department of the University of San Carlos, Mr. Challoner A. Matero, through the endorsement of the OIC Dean, Ms. Marissa M. Baldecir, OIC Dean and the approval of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Fr. Felino B. The graduates will be employed in the fast growing BPO industry and ready to take the international examination for Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) being accredited in U.K. Canada, and Australia.

The chairman of the Accountancy Department of the University of San Carlos, Mr. Challoner A. Matero, through the endorsement of the OIC Dean, Ms. Marissa M. Baldecir, OIC Dean and the approval of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Fr. Felino B. Jabines, Jr. , SVD, announces the passers for the BS-Accountancy, BS-Management Accounting, and BS-Accounting Technology programs for this upcoming academic year 2009-2010. The entrance examination was conducted in various testing centers in the Visayas and Mindanao last August 1, 2008 to January 31, 2009, aside from the regular onsite testing.
First batch of first year enrolment will start on April 20, 2009 to May 2, 2009. All passers are required to enroll within this period. Beyond this period, any available slots will be given to wait list applicants as well as late and qualified applicants.

Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting (BSMA) is a globally-aligned four year program with a total of 215 units. Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology (BSAT) is a three and a half year program with a total of 212 units. The program follows a global accountancy curriculum which is heavily computer-based. The graduates will be employed in the fast growing BPO industry and ready to take the international examination for Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) being accredited in U.K. Canada, and Australia.

USC: No tuition fee increase this year

That the present period is a critical time in history is no longer a cliché but a sobering warning. Because the primary economic engine that is America has stumbled, the rest of the world is scrambling to adjust. Government reassurances notwithstanding, the Philippines is not immune from contagion; in fact unsettling evidence of the impact is already being noted at regional and province levels.
In Cebu City some of our own stakeholders have already manifested their apprehensions about possible tuition fee adjustments. As demanded by CHED and due process, and after consultation, we are now issuing the following announcement.
The USC administration, College Faculty Association (CFA) and the Administrative Employees Association (ADEA) have jointly agreed that for Academic Year 2009-2010, ALL FEES in ALL departments shall be MAINTAINED at their 2008-2009 levels.
Although this common decision is dictated by the global economic crisis, it is also the product of discernment in the spirit of our vocation as Christian educators. It aims to help new and continuing students of USC and their families to cope with the times even as they seek education in our institution.
Rest assured that the Administration shall partner with CFA and ADEA to look for ways to help faculty and staff to lighten the sacrifices they have graciously assumed to help others cope with the economic difficulties we all face today.
We invite each member of the USC academic and student communities to be more proactive in helping to cut expenses in our operations. An obvious start is avoiding wastage of or economizing on electricity and school materials. Thank you all for the goodwill shown so far; thank you in advance as well for the cooperation awaited in the future.
