USC Alumni Association Message
Beloved Carolinians, it is my pleasure and privilege to address you and share with you the vision of the USC Alumni Association, now the umbrella of all internal and external Alumni chapters. The internal chapters are the college and department -based alumni associations within the university, and the external chapters are the different alumni associations organized outside the university.
As we celebrate milestones and expand horizons in our lives as Carolinians, we envision strengthening all the chapters; the alumni associations based on their professions and graduation batches to organize and link with their colleges and departments and with the alumni affairs office; and those geographically-based to register as an alumni association at the usc alumni affairs office to provide the office the opportunity to network with them thus making one USC Alumni Association. To quote the usc alumni association manual: “The USC Alumni Associations forms a constituency, a human network that exists to promote the mission of the University of San Carlos to pursue educational and professional excellence; broaden friendships among member alumni and sustain loyalty to Christian ideals.”
We, Carolinians are called to be professionally competent, morally responsible and socially aware wherever we are and whatever we do. Faithfulness to our calling means, we ought to become people who are professionally able to accomplish the tasks assigned to us in our workplace and communities and endeavour to perform with excellence in our contribution to education, research, science, literature and other creative endeavours. We ought to become people who steadfastly live the Christian ideals handed to us by our Alma Mater and excel in demonstrating moral integrity and proficiency in the practice of our professions in business management, civil administration, public service and entrepreneurship. We ought to become people-oriented people dedicated to serve the causes of the under-privileged and marginalized; and to community services exemplifying the Christian values of love, justice, peace, integrity of creation and harmony among people of different cultures and creed. Therefore, Carolinians are urged to pursue activities that enhance this calling.
On the other hand, it is part and parcel of our calling as Carolinians to become aware of the development needs of our Alma Mater and offer our support in achieving her goals. This awareness urges us to uncover and perform our tasks as Carolinians for the benefit of our university and our own.
My dear Carolinians, the USC Alumni Association and the Alumni Affairs Office are here for us all to provide the leadership, the means and service support in sustaining our efforts to develop and reinforce the bonds between the university and the alumni; promote the unity and diversity within the university family; and bring together and synergize efforts of alumni chapters to achieve the common goals and mission of the association.
In behalf of the University, I express my heartfelt appreciation of your efforts to organize your alumni associations; and we assure you of our support in all your endeavours. May we all be blessed by the Holy Triune God with harmony, one mind and heart, so that we may truly become Witnesses of the Word in the World. Thank you.

Carolinians, Come Home
We will be celebrating the Grand Alumni Homecoming with the theme “Renewing Dedication, Confirming Loyalty” on Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Cebu Grand Convention Center, Archbishop Reyes Avenue, Cebu City. After toiling for many fruitful years either in the corporate world or personal business ventures, it’s about time to pause, reminisce, relax and have fun in an afternoon and evening of fellowship, great entertainment, dancing, group games, prizes and awards, and other wonderful surprises together with former classmates and teachers from the good old days.

Upcoming Grand Alumni Homecoming:
We will be celebrating our 61st USC Foundation Week, and one of the highlights is the Grand Alumni Homecoming with its theme "Renewing Dedication, Confirming Loyalty". This will be held at the Grand Convention Center of Cebu, Archbishop Reyes Avenue, Cebu City on Sunday, August 30, 2009. Registration starts at 2:00 pm and followed by the Eucharistic Celebration and the Awarding of the Most Outstanding Alumni. Tickets are available at P 300.00, for more information you may call Fe or Beth at 253-5495 or 253-100 local 129.
"Renewing Dedication, Confirming Loyalty"
(Theme for USC Grand Alumni Homecoming 2009)
The USC Alumni Association was established early on when the SVD Fathers took over the former Colegio de San Carlos in 1935. The organization as envisioned was to be a means to perpetuate the dedication of the students after graduation to the ideals of St. Charles Borromeo, the reformer of seminary system and educational work of the Church. He pushed for the proper and excellent training of priest and religious while also being noted for his concern for the youth to receive adequate educational opportunity for both personal and professional development.
This dedication to St. Charles’ ideals was expressed in the school’s original motto: Scientia et Virtus (Knowledge and Moral Strength). For its student’s identity, the name Carolinians was adopted thereby signifying their being guided and formed according to the ideals of St. Charles in their educational training in the arts, culture, and science together with their religious formation and activities. In the manner, a uniquely Carolinian spirit was to be established. To make this a life-long legacy for Carolinians, it was not by accident that the school’s yearbook was titled “Semper Fidelis” (Ever Faithful). This is to mean that Carolinians are always to remain faithful to the Truth they know and the Christian values they have learned to accept as theirs to live and abide by ideally during their entire life.
Members of the USC Alumni Association would then take pride in the privilege of having imbibed during their educational training, above and beyond acquiring the competence in their elected profession, the Christian attitude of fraternal love and gratitude. As an expression of this spirit, successful alumni members are to assist the institution in its endeavour to pursue consistently educational excellence, and provide other students who follow especially among the poor but deserving among them to receive also a good education.
In real life, however, Carolinians are not immune to the worldly spirit of the quest for wealth, prestige, and power generated by the modern social atmosphere of materialism and hedonism which negates the concern for the “common good” of all – the right for all to possess and enjoy equally the largesse of God’s creation. The noble Christ-given model of sufficiency for oneself and sharing with others has become practically meaningless to most people. Rather, the rich and influential become richer and more powerful, while the poor becomes poorer and utterly marginalized. Because of this, in the contemporary world we live, greed, corruption, violence, and disregard for human life dominate the landscape of our existence.
We observed, therefore, that there seems to be another value-aspect needed to help change this appalling situation. The application of knowledge (scientia) and the exercise of moral strength (virtus) are not enough. The dynamic dimension of Christ’s “do unto others as what you would like others do unto you” – that is to serve others in love is essential. This is the providential reason for adding the third word in the University motto – Devotio (service) – to complete the reality of the Trinitarian relationship between God and human beings among themselves as children of God.
To realize our vision of a world of love, justice and harmony revealed to us by Christ as possible even now –“the kingdom of God is upon you” and beyond this world of chaos, all and particularly speaking about Carolinians as men and women of faith, they have to renew their dedication to the institutional ideas of USC and confirm once again their loyalty to guide their lives with the knowledge of Truth, the moral strength derived from the obedience to God’s will, and service to others in love.
In this manner Carolinians can make a difference, even just to light a candle, in the world of darkness enveloped by the miasma of evil. Such will be the basis of our strong hope to see a future better world for the generations who follow us.

USC: 54th Grand Alumni Homecoming
The University of San Carlos, through The Carolinians Incorporated, will hold its 54th Grand Alumni Homecoming this 24th of August 2008 at the South Campus (the old Girls’ High) Pentagon. Registrations will start at 3:00 p.m.
All USC alumni, wherever you are on the planet, are invited. There is a registration fee of P400 (around $10) for dinner and door prizes.

University of San Carlos famous alumni
I was reading about Vicente Sotto, one of the greatest Cebuanos of the 20th century and the "Father of Cebuano Literature", and found out that he actually finished his secondary education at the University of San Carlos (formerly Colegio de San Carlos).
I searched for more notable alumni of USC and saw this from wiki:
* Sergio Osmeña - second president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines
* Christopher Go - Filipino astronomer who discovered a new red spot on Jupiter, an achievement recognized by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Be an Active USC Alumni Member!
Active membership in the USC Alumni offers the following advantage:
* It formalizes the support that you, as an alumnus, give to your Association.
The University makes sure its alumni are able to keep in touch for updates, linkage, and job placement. The latter is an important service it offers to former students, especially the new graduates. This is facilitated through the Alumni Affairs and Job Placement Office under the Office of Scholarships, Alumni, and External Affairs. Alumni Relations Committees are organized in the eight colleges composed of designated faculty, staff, and students.

The Chairs of the College Alumni Relations Committees together with those of the Basic Education Departments in both USC North and South Campuses constitute the University of San Carlos Council of Alumni Relations (USC CAREs).
The Alumni Relations Committees handle the following areas of concern in their respective college/Basic Education Department.

Active membership in the USC Alumni offers the following advantage:
* It formalizes the support that you, as an alumnus, give to your Association.
The University makes sure its alumni are able to keep in touch for updates, linkage, and job placement. The latter is an important service it offers to former students, especially the new graduates. This is facilitated through the Alumni Affairs and Job Placement Office under the Office of Scholarships, Alumni, and External Affairs. Alumni Relations Committees are organized in the eight colleges composed of designated faculty, staff, and students.

Sinulog short film contest won by Carolinians
Carolinians win grand prize in Sinulog short film contest
A group consisting mostly of fresh graduates from the Department of Fine Arts bagged this year’s grand prize in the Sinulog Short Film Competition.
Eight Thumbs, a collective of young independent filmmakers, most of whom used to be classmates in USC, teamed up to produce “Sinug”, an experimental short documentary that features striking motion graphics.
Directed by Remton Zuasola, the film investigates how the original native dance of devotion was distorted when “Sinug” became a major public festival called the “Sinulog”.
Zuasola and his group received a cash prize of P30,000 and a trophy. Their video bested over a dozen entries that included works of Manila-based filmmakers and a Frenchman.
When not busy doing commercial projects, Zuasola and his group organizes film workshops and produce short films.

Carolinians selected for China Scholarship Program
Two Carolinians were among 34 scholars sent to China for an all-expense-paid one-year study on Chinese language and culture through the China Scholarship Program of the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation.
Atty. Leslie Jeanne Y. Cordero and Joseph Niño K. Augusto were named among the 34 “talented and highly-driven young achievers,” according to the communication released by the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation. Cordero (Ph.B., 2001) and Augusto (B.S.A., 2005) both graduated magna cum laude from the University.
The standards and requirements for the selection of the scholars were rigorous. The screening process alone took six months and involved several phases that enabled the Foundation to identify scholars with exemplary academics, leadership skills, cross-cultural experience, career goals, communication and emotional maturity.
The scholars were sent to the Beijing Language and Culture University to help them understand the economic miracle of China and apply what they learn to the Philippine setting.

Christopher Y. Go awarded the San Carlos Borromeo Award
San Carlos Borromeo Award conferred on Christopher Y. Go
The San Carlos Borromeo Award was conferred today on internationally-recognized amateur astronomer Mr. Christopher Y. Go in in solemn ceremonies this afternoon at the CAFA Theater, Talamban Campus, with physicists, Go's relatives, and the Carolinian academic community in attendance.
The award was presented by Fr. Teodoro Gapuz, SVD, vice-president for academic affairs, on behalf of the University Administration and the Board of Trustees, with Dr. Roland Emerito Otadoy, chair of the Department of Physics, and Dr. Elizabeth Remedio, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, as witnesses.

Named after the University’s patron saint known for his great contributions to Catholic reformation and the establishment of seminaries while living a humble existence, the award was conferred on Go in recognition of his discovery of the changing conditions of a storm on planet Jupiter known as Red Spot Jr., officially designated as Oval BA, an achievement recognized internationally.
A graduate of a Physics degree from USC in 1991, Go rose to international fame on February 24, 2006, when he alerted the Jupiter Section of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO) that Oval BA, a storm that formed in Jupiter in 2000, had metamorphosed from white to red. This important discovery was confirmed by the ALPO Japan Kansai Division. In March 2006, it had become as red as the planet's most famous "landmark", the storm called Great Red Spot. In reference to this, Oval BA is now fondly known as Red Spot Jr. or Red Jr.
Other than the award, Go was also given an appointment as the University’s first honorary lecturer signed just this morning by Fr. Pres. Roderick C. Salazar, Jr., SVD and confirmed by Fr. Teodoro Gapuz, SVD, the vice-president for academic affairs. Fr. Gapuz represented Fr. Pres. Salazar during the ceremonies as he had to depart for

In response to the award and the appointment, Go made a 20-minute presentation of his discovery and of the progress of work on Jupiter following his internationally-recognized achievement.

The group has also been awarded four orbits of HST in February 2007. Just recently, its proposal to use Cycle 16 of HST to study the Jovian climate was approved by the Space Telescope Science Institute, the agency under NASA handling the HST.

2007 Most Outstanding USC Alumni Awardees
Seven feted as hundreds of alumni come home to USC anew
Seven of this year’s eight Most Outstanding Alumni Awardees were feted by Carolinians Inc., the alumni association of all USC graduates, as hundreds of other alumni from various places in the country and abroad---including a large delegation from the Carolinians of Surigao, Inc. and Carolinians Midwest USA---came to attend the 2007 USC Grand Alumni Homecoming.
The seven were Philip Ngai Tan (B.S. in Business Administration) for entrepreneurship; Archt. Socorro B. Atega (B.S in Architecture, Magna cum laude) for landscape architecture; Judge Marilyn L. Yap (Bachelor of Laws), for law and justice; Dir. Prudenciana C. Cruz (B.S.E. major in Library Science) for library science; Engr. Ernesto Codina (B.S. in Mechanical Engineering) for aeronautics and space flight engineering; Arlene Donaire (A.B. in Economics) for environmental advocacy; and Arnulfo Ramos (M.A. in History) for community service. Also awarded but failed to attend the event was Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell (Pre-Medicine) for dermatology.

Fr. Pres. Roderick C. Salazar, Jr., SVD, in a brief opening statement, exhorted the alumni to be witnesses to the Word even as he explained the beautifully crafted theme of this year's USC Foundation Week, "Beyond Borders, Within Worlds: Witness to the Word, USC's Corporate Social Responsibility".
The annual homecoming traditionally kicks off the first day of USC Foundation Week, which marks the time when four Jesuit priests and a lay brother opened the oldest school in the Philippines and USC's precursor, the Colegio de San Ildefonso, on August 21, 1595 in Cebu.
As in previous years, a fireworks display wowed the alumni even as fanfare and celebrations of noble achievements by Carolinians ensued. A unique feature of this year’s reunion was the special request for all alumni to attend wearing their best pair of jeans. The cover and signage of the homecoming were also a fresh departure from the usual formalized designs that marked most of the homecoming souvenir programs in the past.

Karen Gaviola grabs 7th place in Bar exams
Carolinian grabs 7th place in Bar exams
The University of San Carlos once again affirmed its position as one of the top law schools in the country with Karen Gaviola, valedictorian of the 2006 law class and a summa cum laude B.S. Accountancy graduate, landing in seventh place.
Gaviola, who did not expect to be among the top ten placers in the exams, rated 85.68 percent, a very tiny fraction lower than other placers ahead of her. She leads 51 of 60 successful Carolinian barristers who made it to the country's most grueling series of examinations held each year for aspiring lawyers. Another Carolinian alumnus, cum laude accountancy graduate Al-Shawaid L. Ismael, who studied law at another Cebu university, placed eighth in the same exams.
USC's overall performance this year was 85 percent, a very comfortable margin that affirms its reputation as one of the best law schools outside of Manila. Last year, USC ranked second among all of the country's law schools in its performance in the Bar exams.

Christopher Go, discovered "Red Jr."
Physics alumnus receives Presidential Medal of Merit
Christopher Go (B.S. Physics, 1991) received the Presidential Medal of Merit during a ceremony held as part of the 25th Anniversary of the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development (PCIERD) last March 15, 2007.
Go, space physicist and scientist, earned recognition in the international astronomy community for his discovery on
Go received the Medal of Merit from Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Dubbed “Red Jr.” the new spot is almost half the size of the Great Red Spot, which means it is about the same size as Planet Earth. Red Jr. itself was formed in 2000 when three smaller spots collided and merged. The color remained white until December 2005 when Go reported that it slowly turned brown. When Oval BA suddenly turned red, Go was again first to report it through the Jupiter Section of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers.

Go is a planetary imager and is the founder of the USC Astronomical Society. He regularly holds stargazing and other activities at the USC Talamban Campus.

Carolinian Lawyer Named Outstanding Councilor of the Philippines
Atty. Lynette Geonzon (USC Law, 1999) became the first and only lady councilor to be named Outstanding Councilor of the Philippines in a nationwide search sponsored by Philippine Councilors’ League (PCL) and Jaycees International.
The awarding ceremony was held on March 9, 2007 on the occasion of PCL’s National Convention held at Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).
A number of councilors from all over the country participated but Ms. Geonzon was specifically cited for her innovative and significant legislations in Minglanilla, Cebu where she is now completing her second term as Municipal Councilor.
Ms. Geonzon is the only awardee from Region 7 and the only female among the ten award recipients. She and the other winning councilors got a trophy and P100,000.00 each from Special Allotment Release Order from Sen. Edgardo Angara, who was guest of honor during the PCL National Convention.
