Faigao Memorial Writers’ Workshop 25th Anniversary

The Cornelio Faigao Memorial Writers Workshop has been supporting and promoting Bisayan literature and writers since 1984. On it’s 25th anniversary, the organizers are inviting all Faigao Fellows to attend the reunion this December 19, 2009.

Registration Fee: Php 500.00 (inclusive of meals and an e-book, “Brown Child: The Best of Faigao”)

USC International Students Welcome Party 2009

A general assembly and welcome party for international students was held last Saturday afternoon, June 11, at the Theodore Buttenbruch Hall, Main Campus. The event was successfully organized by the officers of the USC International Students Association for AY 2009-2010 in cooperation with the Office of External Affairs, Office of the University Registrar and the Office of Student Affairs.

Fr. President Dionisio Miranda formally welcomed all international students who are enrolled in the University’s different academic programs. Fr. Louie Punzalan, Coordinator for International Students, outlined the program of activities for the school year and encouraged active participation by everyone. Paul Ole Sikamoi, a 3rd year Kenyan Pharmacy student and President of the USC International Students Association, delivered the closing remarks.

One hundred ninety-one international students are enrolled in the University for the First Semester, AY 2009-2010. There are 95 Koreans, 36 Kenyans, 15 Iranians, 9 Americans, 8 Mainland Chinese, 6 Japanese, 3 Canadians, 3 Indonesians, 3 Timorese, 2 Germans, 2 Malaysians, 2 Marshallese, 1 Indian, 1 Micronesian, 1 Nepalese, 1 Pakistani, 1 Spanish, 1 Swedish, 1 Thai and 1 Vietnamese.

2009 Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth Program

Announcement via USC.edu: 2009 Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth Program (JENESYS Program)

The Office of External Affairs announces the 10-day Visit Japan Program for College Students in May 2009, implemented jointly by the Japan Information and Cultural Centre (JICC) of the Japanese Embassy, Japan International Cooperation Centre (JICE) and the National Youth Commission (NYC). The program is funded by the Japanese Government with the ASEAN Secretariat.

Qualified and interested college students from the University of San Carlos who are currently taking Japanese Language courses or Japan-related subjects as well as Information Technology students with interest in Japan, supervisors who are experienced and actively engaged in managing youth exchange activities in various fields, those who are interested in Japanese culture and society and who have Japanese language proficiency may secure the necessary application form and guidelines from the Office of External Affairs, Room 128, Main Campus. (A sample copy of the application form and guidelines will also be posted on the bulletin board in front of the Office of External Affairs.)

The students who will qualify to participate in this program must be first-time travellers to Japan while to the supervisors this condition shall not apply.

Deadline for the submission of application forms and documentary requirements will be on Friday, 5 December 2008.

Mexican envoy talks of shared past, issues facing Mexico and RP

Her Excellency, Madame Erendira Araceli Paz Campos, Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of Mexico to the Philippines, visited the University this morning where she addressed students and faculty on the shared cultural heritage and current areas of common concern between her country and the Philippines.

In her speech at Theordore Buttenbruch Hall, the Ambassador traced the colonial experience of Mexico and the Philippines, reminding the audience that globalization began with the Galleon Trade that was carried out for two centuries by the two former colonies of Spain.

Moving beyond the past, Ambassador Campos also delved on the issues of migration and migrant workers that confront both countries today. She expressed her agreement to growing concerns of how to ensure that migrant workers are protected abroad. At the same time, she also hoped that both the Philippines and Mexico would be able to develop further so that the local labor force would stay rather than leave for opportunities abroad.

The ambassador, who was met by Fr. Teodoro Gapuz, SVD, the vice-president for academic affairs, also gave the audience a briefing about Mexico, its tourist sites, and opportunities for graduate studies, among others.

Joining Fr. Gapuz during the lecture at Buttenbruch Hall were Dr. Elizabeth Remedio, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the chairs of the various departments of the college. Mr. Louis Ugarte, the honorary consul of Mexico in Cebu, also joined the ambassador during her brief visit.

New heritage group Hambin holds lecture on religious movements

Hamiling Binilin (Hambin), a newly formed heritage advocacy group, held its third monthly lecture last August 26, 2007 at the Cathedral Museum of Cebu with Prof. Laila Labajo, a faculty member of the Department of History, as speaker. Labajo presented her paper entitled, “Kalihukan sa Tinuohan: Reformative and Dissident Religious Movements in Cebu: 1900-1990.”

In her lecture, Labajo tackled the origin, growth, beliefs, and practices of 14 religious movements that have sprouted in Cebu. According to her, religious movements came into existence as a result of the desire of followers for a new way of life after undergoing extreme stress posed by many factors experienced during the early 1900s up to the 1990s.

This latest lecture is the third since Hambin began tackling fascinating aspects of Cebuano culture and history. In June, Dr. Louie Nacorda, another Hambin member, examined whether Tamblot, the Boholano religious leader was male or female. Trizer Dale Mansueto, a faculty member of Department of History and the Department of Languages and Literature, followed Nacroda;s lecture a month later with a discussion on the construction of stone churches in Cebu as seen though the canonical Libro de Cargo y Data.

Hambin is composed of the first batch of graduates of the Certificate Course on Cebuano Heritage Studies initiated by the Department of History in tandem with the Cebuano Studies Center.

Other than Labajo, Nacorda and Mansueto, the group is also composed of Gavin Bagares, Ernesto Chua, Joselito Costas, Lilia Tio, Jason Verallo and Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu.

Gov. Gwendolyn F. Garcia opens USC Foundation Week

The honorable Gov. Gwendolyn F. Garcia graced the opening of the University Foundation Week today, August 20, 2007, at the USC Talamban Campus.

Gov. Garcia expressed her gratitude to USC on choosing the theme, "Beyond Borders, Within Worlds" and emphasizing the University's Corporate Social Responsibility. She said that now more than ever, public and private partnership is important. "No man... no woman... can do this alone," Gov. Garcia remarked on social responsibility.

The day started with a Holy Mass attended by the University community who filled to capacity the Church of St. Arnold and St. Joseph. USC President Fr. Roderick C. Salazar Jr., SVD celebrated the Mass along with his confreres. Reflecting the theme of the Foundation Week, prayers were offered in four languages.

The Opening Mass at the Church of St. Arnold and St. Joseph was well attended by the USC community.

Afterwards, Fr. Salazar read the statement of USC's Corporate Social Responsibility. Part of the document emphasized the Carolinian's identity and the theme, "We have seen with our eyes and touched with our hands... we witness to the Word beyond our borders, within our worlds." Copies of the statement were then given to representatives from the four campuses.

The celebrations during the opening of the exhibits at the Bunzel Building lobby highlighted the University's involvement in the communities. Corporate partners also put up their own exhibits. The opening was also attended by Commission on Higher Education Regional Director Dr. Enrique Grecia and Board of Trustee member Dr. Pericles Dakay, who assisted the governor in cutting the ribbon.

USC forum on extra-judicial killings

Impunity of perpetrators and lack of serious effort at investigation and prosecution are two major factors for the unabated political killings in the country.

These were pointed out by Atty. Jose Midas Marquez, spokesperson of the Supreme Court, and Atty. Neri Colmenares, spokesperson of the lawyers’ group Counsels for the Defense of Civil Liberties, at the forum held at the Wrocklage Yard of the University of San Carlos (USC) yesterday (August 16, 2007) afternoon.

The forum themed, ‘Political Killings: Effects on the Judicial System’, was attended by students and faculty of the departments of Sociology and Anthropology, Political Science, and Economics, as well as lawyers, religious, human rights advocates, and law students from other universities.

The organizers with Atty. Jose Midas Marquez, Spokesperson of the Supreme Court and Atty. Neri Colmenares, Spokesperson, CODAL.

Atty. Marquez said the judiciary is addressing the problems by working on the recommendations identified in the Supreme Court Summit on Extra-Judicial Killings last month. These are the inclusion in the rules of court of the remedy of Writ of Amparo, which encompasses the demand to avail of the bill of rights, and the strengthening of the witness protection program, among others.

Atty. Colmenares however cautioned that good intentions of the Supreme Court and dedication of human rights lawyers and advocates will not be enough without full public support and participation especially when government security forces are suspected to be involved.

The forum, which was co-sponsored by the USC Lex Circle, USC Supreme Student Council, Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)–Cebu City, National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) and KARAPATAN, was opened by Atty. Briccio Joseph Boholst, chairperson of IBP–Cebu City and moderated by Atty. Noemi Truya, of NUPL.

It strived to: 1) heighten awareness on the state of political killings; 2) familiarize participants on the strategies employed to abate the problems related to political killings; and 3) provide a venue to discuss possible legislative and judiciary solutions to end all political killings.

USC Law and Business School Building Breaks Ground

Law and Business School Building Breaks Ground

Another milestone in USC was ushered in by the Administration to fruition and was heralded by the ground breaking ceremony which marked the dedication of the site and the start of construction work for the new Law and Business School building at the Main Campus.

The new building will cater to the increasing enrolment of the College of Law and the Graduate Business Program of the College of Commerce. The building will have 30 lecture rooms, an Audio-Visual Room, Review and Moot Courts, Administrative Offices, Exhibit Area, and Student Lounge. It will be ready for partial occupancy at the start of the Second Semester, School Year 2007-2008, and for full occupancy by December 2007.

The construction of the a new building for the Colleges of Law and Commerce is the culmination of a dream for USC, for two of its star colleges, which is no longer far and elusive, according to Fr. Louie Punzalan, SVD.

And from Fr. Teodoro Gapuz, SVD – a home of unity for future board topnotchers and outstanding businessmen – a literal and metaphorical powerhouse of professionals extending a new dimension to USC’s Credo: Witness to the word, locally and globally. The beaming faces of the administrators of the College of Commerce led by Fr. Mark Mathias, SVD, who led the prayer service and the College of Law led by Atty. Alex Monteclar summed up the response of the community to the soon-to-rise edifice.
