Fu Jen Catholic University Students Visit USC
Taiwanese college students and three teaching assistants from Fu Jen Catholic University's College of Science and Engineering are visiting USC from January 21 to 30.
The exposure visit involves a week-long series of activities for the Taiwanese students to strengthen their English language proficiency and provide cultural exposure through participation in lecture and laboratory classes and interaction with Chemistry faculty and students in the morning and engagement in community extension work at Talamban National High School in the afternoon. A tour of Cebu and Bohol is also part of the itinerary.

Librarians - Information Specialists Seminar
The USC Department of Library and Information Science is inviting librarians and information specialists to a seminar with the theme “Librarianship as a Profession: Trends, Issues and Impact to Society” on February 8-9, 2010 at 8:00 AM, Buttenbruch Hall, USC Main Campus.
Speakers include Prof. Corazon Nera, Chair Board for Librarians, Prof. Anabelle Acedera, LIS Faculty-USC and Former Director of Libraries, XU, Prof. Victoria Santos, Director of Libraries, NDDU, Ms. Celedonia Cayaban, Chief Librarian, De La Salle – College of St. Benilde and Dr. Marianita Dablio, Chair, Department of Library and Information Science, MSU-IIT.

In honor of the feast of the Child Jesus, Señor Santo Niño, a solemn procession is scheduled in the afternoon of Saturday, January 16. Since this falls on a Saturday before the mid-term examinations, we are supposed to have a whole day work. However, to allow the devotees to join the activity, work will only be up to 12:00 noon.
Monday, January 18, the day following the feast of Señor Santo Niño is a free day for universities in the city and in our university academic calendar. Thus, to give time for the students to make payments and secure their admission slips for the mid-term examinations, Tellers and Assessment Clerks are available in Downtown (Main) Campus on Monday, January 18 from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon and 1:30-5:00 p.m.

USC Granted Autonomous Status by CHED Until 2014

The Commission on Higher Education granted anew autonomous status to the University of San Carlos for a period of five years, as the university satisfied CHED’s three criteria of having: 1) a long tradition of integrity and untarnished reputation, 2) commitment to excellence, and 3) sustainability and viability of operations. Coffee Table Book: "Balaanong Bahandi: Sacred Treasures of the Archdiocese of Cebu"
The University of San Carlos Press and the Cebu Cathedral Museum formally launched last Thursday, November 26, a 308-page full color coffee table book entitled “Balaanong Bahandi: Sacred Treasures of the Archdiocese of Cebu”. The book details the art history and architectural features of the first 56 colonial-period parish churches and convents that were built in Cebu. The event, which was graced by Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal and Gov. Gwendolyn F. Garcia, was witnessed by over 200 guests as well as book sponsors and partners.
Balaanong Bahandi is a project of the museum, the Archdiocesan Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church and University of San Carlos Press to mark 75 years of Cebu as an archdiocese. It is also intended to be a continuation of the seminal work of Fr. Felipe S. Redondo who in 1886 published the book, Breve Reseña de lo que fue y de lo que es la Diocesis de Cebu (A short account of what was and what is the Diocese of Cebu) or Breve Reseña, for short .
Under Msgr. Carlito Pono as project director, Balaanong Bahandi is perhaps the only coffee table book of its kind so far that is researched, written, photographed and printed entirely in Cebu by Cebuanos. It brings together pencil-pushers who are members of the archdiocesan heritage commission and the museum’s curatorial board together with young but professional heritage photographers.
Louella Eslao-Alix, Melva Rodriguez-Java, Trizer Dale Mansueto, Fr. Brian Brigoli and Arnold Sancover wrote the text while Jobers R. Bersales, USC Press manager, edited the book. It was Bersales who originally conceived the project and eventually became its project manager with Alix as coordinator.
The book’s principal photographers were Estan Cabigas, Lorens Gibb Lapinid and Mark Andrew Jorolan while Rodolfo Alix, Carlos Apuhin, Fr. Generoso Rebayla and Gil Francis Maningo contributed additional photographs. (Cabigas is a well-known photographer who has collaborated with the Augustinian historian Fr. Predro Galende in the book “Philippine Church Facades”.) Lapinid, who has won an international award for graphic arts, also served as the book’s layout artist and indexer. The book is a hardbound volume and was printed by Mackmayer Printers using 5-color Heidelberg speedmaster 102.
The book costs P2,000 each and will be available for purchase starting December 1 onwards at the Cathedral Museum (Tel. 4123455) and also from December 10 onwards at USC Press (Tel. 25321000 loc. 175).

Two departments named Centers for Development
The Commission on Higher Education and the Technical Panel for Engineering and Technology have identified the Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Computer Engineering as CENTERS OF DEVELOPMENT, as approved during the 341st Commission en banc meeting on Wednesday, 14 October 2009.
The date and venue for the awarding ceremonies for the designated centers shall be announced later.

Pre-Midterm Exam Schedule
Pre-Midterm Examinations Schedule for 2nd semester 2009-2010
Pre-midterm examinations for the 2nd semester, 2009-2010 are scheduled on Dec 3-4, 2009 (Thursday & Friday). Examinations for Saturday classes will be arranged between the teachers and the students.
Students are advised to secure their pre-midterm Admission Slip from the Accounting office as early as possible to avoid rush at the last hour. Students who have been granted temporary enrolment or those who failed to submit their admission credentials (Certificate of Transer Credential, TOR, Certificate of Good Moral Character, original birth certificate) must secure clearance from the University REgistrar before they can claim their pre-midterm admission slip.
Teachers are reminded of the University policy of "NO ADMISSION SLIP, NO EXAMINATION" which has to be adhered to strictly. Teachers should double check the pre-midterm admission slips of their students before examination to make sure that they are indeed officially enrolled in the class. This should be done in order to resolve as early as possible the problems of students, especially for petitioned and tutorial classes, and to avoid cases wherein students request for enrolment even at the end of the semester.

Peter Bugden Scholarship, inaugurated
The Peter Bugden Scholarship was inaugurated on September 23rd 2009 at the University of San Carlos in Cebu.
The Peter Bugden Scholarship is established by the Catholic Education Office and the Primary and Secondary Schools of the Diocese of Sandhurst in acknowledgement of the dedicated career of Peter Bugden as a Diocesan Leader and wise steward of Finance, Facilities and Resources. Peter served Sandhurst parishes and schools over a period of 26 years with integrity, skill and faith-filled commitment.
This Scholarship is established to provide an opportunity for a Filipino student to complete a Degree in Business at the University of San Carlos. It is intended to support a student who is financially deprived and who would not otherwise have this opportunity. The Scholarship will be administered by the University of San Carlos. It will be reviewed at five yearly intervals by Catholic Education Sandhurst and the University.
