ECE studes win 11th UP EEE national quiz show

Three Electronics and Communications Engineering students of the University of San Carlos won the prestigious 11th SquEEEze, a nationwide quiz show sponsored by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, University of the Philippines–Diliman.

The Carolinians who bagged first place were Clarence Adrian Valendez, Jason Marc Alegado, and Rissa Anne dela Cerna. The competition drew 53 entrants from 30 Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering schools from all over the country. Two teams from De La Salle University (DLSU) grabbed 2nd and 3rd places.

(From left to right) Valendez, Alegado and Cerna bested 52 other teams in the 11th SquEEEze.

The quiz covered topics on Circuit Theory, Electronics, Electromagnetics, Electric Machines, Digital Design, Computers, Power Systems, Communications and Signal Processing, Control Systems and Electrical and Electronics Engineering trivia.

During the elimination round, all 53 teams each composed of three students went through a grueling two–hour written examination held at the National Institute of Science and Math Education Auditorium inside UP–Diliman campus in the morning of March 8, 2008.

After the noon break, the top ten teams were announced to compete in the final round. These included three teams from DLSU, two from Ateneo de Manila University, and one each from the University of Batangas, University of the East–Caloocan, Technological Institute of the Philippines–Quezon City and the University of San Carlos.

This year’s SquEEEze was only the second try for USC, whose 2007 team placed a modest 5th out of 33 competing teams. Engr. Nena Mercedes Velasco, who was part of that team, served as one of the current team’s trainers.
