This program prepares students to possess a strong foundation on finance, which enables them to make sound and competitive financial decisions and analyses.

The program prepares individuals to start and manage their own business, and develops entrepreneurs who are motivated and knowledgeable in identifying opportunities, and actually starting and managing a business

USC: New Minor Program in Economics

Minor Program in Economics

RATIONALE
The Minor in Economics provides training in economic theory and methods at the intermediate level and at the level of upper class undergraduate field courses. It is designed to provide a student in allied fields of business, the social sciences, the natural sciences, and engineering with a familiarity with the economic perspective and methodology as it is applied on areas of common interest. These areas include but are not limited to, environmental management, financial markets, public management and policy, industrial organization, organizational efficiency and many others. In these areas, an understanding of the nature of the problems being studied is made more acute and complete with an appreciation of the implications of rational human behavior in dealing with the problem of scarce resources and the resulting incentives that ensue. This unique perspective to human behavior, the organization of institutions, and the resulting interplay is something that the discipline brings to the table.

In addition, the minor in economics is especially apt for students whose analytical and methodological skill sets in their majors coincide with those required for work in the economics major, roughly training in mathematical and empirical analysis, that would enable them to grasp economic principles at little added cost but with substantial benefits in terms of employability, workplace efficiency, and upward mobility. This will be especially true of students majoring in mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, statistics, and engineering. Increasingly, professionals with these skill sets are being tapped to bring these skills to bear on problems that intersect with those traditionally considered within the purview of the social sciences (e.g., networks, evolutionary games, regulation, financial markets). Opportunities for synergy are ripe in both cases.

The minor in economics will also make the transition to graduate or professional programs in economics, business or public policy easier for students with training other than these fields.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
1. Qualifying Requirements. A student opting to minor in economics must have completed the principles course sequence in economics consisting of Economics 21 (Microeconomics) and Economics 22 (Macroeconomics). As an alternative, a student who has completed Economics 1N (Principles of Economics with Taxation and Agrarian Reform) may minor in economics provided that his or her academic performance in the course indicates that he will complete the minor program at a standard acceptable to the Department. The Chair, in consultation with the faculty, will render judgment on admission on a case to case basis for the latter case.

2. Completion Requirements. (a) Six units of intermediate economic theory satisfied by taking Economics 121 (Intermediate Microeconomics) or its equivalent, and Economics 122 (Intermediate Macroeconomics) or its equivalent. (b) Nine units in upper level field and methods courses in economics and allowed equivalents.

PROCEDURAL REQUIREMENTS
1. An applicant for the minor program in economics must complete the application form for the program. Upon approval the student will be included in the list of student minors in economics. This will entitle the student to enroll in the listed economics courses in his/her minor program.

2. In all cases, the student must carry the normally required study load of his/her major program. Thus, a student minor in economics must proceed at a pace that is expected in his/her major program.

3. The grant of the credential of a minor in economics will only be possible if the student completes all the requirements for his major program.

4. If the requirements for the major and the minor program in economics are completed to the satisfaction of the Office of the Registrar, the Major Department Chair, the Chair of the Department of Economics, and the Dean(s) of both Programs, the student is recommended for the credential by the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and approved by the University President through the awarding of a Certificate of Completion. The student’s records will then reflect the completion of a “Minor in Economics” along with the student major field.

Montessori Academy, inaugurated

Fr. Pres. Salazar, trustees inaugurate Montessori Academy

The USC Board of Trustees led by Engr. Jesus Alcordo, took time out from a special meeting to join Father President Roderick C. Salazar, Jr., SVD, together with the University Cabinet and other officials, in inaugurating at noon today the Montessori Academy, the latest member of the Carolinian community. Fr. Pres. Salazar; Fr. Heinz Kulueke, SVD, provincial superior of the SVD Southern Province; and Engr. Alcordo, chair of the Board, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was followed by a prayer service and the blessing of the academy's facilities.

The academy, which is housed at the former Divine Word Formation Center behind the North Campus, is a fruition of over ten years of Montessori education at USC. It began as an alternative learning program of the College of Education in 1995 when Sr. Christine Trudeau, NDS, opened the Montessori Education Center at the South Campus. Dr. Queennie Siega, who was instrumental in developing the program into a distinct educational center, heads the academy together with Sr. Ma. Agnes B. Lentejas, OSF as consultant. A total of 12 teachers make up the pioneering batch of mentors in the Academy.

The academy boasts of nearly a hectare of sprawling campus playgrounds amidst 19 rooms, including a library, a music room, and cosmic room. Currently, there are 152 pupils enrolled, ranging from the sges 3 to 19 years old. The academy is the University's gift to the centennial of the type of education developed by Italy's first woman doctor and child educator, Dr. Maria Montessori.

Computer Engineering partners with Freescale Semiconductor

Computer Engineering signs partnership with Freescale Semiconductor

Freescale Semiconductor Inc., a leading semiconductor company based in Texas, U.S.A., provided student learning kits, microcontroller boards and various equipments for the newly opened “Freescale Embedded Systems Laboratory” under the Department of Computer Engineering.


The establishment of the said laboratory is part of Freescales’s University Program and the Department of Computer Engineering’s effort to strengthen the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering curriculum.


The formal turnover ceremony was held last May 26, 2007 with the Letter of Understanding signed by USC President, Fr. Roderick C. Salazar Jr., SVD and Francis Ng, Freescale Singapore Regional Sales Manager, in behalf of Andy Mastronardi, Director of the University Program.


Under the partnership, the laboratory will serve as a training facility for students in the field of embedded systems design. The initial set of donated equipment includes microcontroller student learning kits, application modules, ColdFire and Zigbee Student Learning Kits.

USC offers new B.S.B.A. majors

USC offers new B.S.B.A. majors

The Department of Business Administration of the College of Commerce announces new majors for the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) program starting academic year 2007–08.

This is in line with the Commission on Higher Education directive that the general program should be discontinued. Instead, students will have a variety of specialized areas to choose from. These are Business Economics, Development Management, Environmental Management, Executive Resources Management, Financial Management, Human Resource Development Management, Legal Management, Marketing Management and Entrepreneurship, and Operations Management.

The department also offers two more programs namely Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship (B.S.E.) and Certificate in Business and Information Management (C.B.I.M.).

College of Commerce offers new accountancy programs

Beginning school year 2007–2008 the University of San Carlos, College of Commerce will be offering four new programs in Accountancy. These are Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology (BSAT), Master of Accountancy–major in Internal Audit (MA–IA), Master of Accountancy–major in Taxation (MA–T), and Master of Management Accounting (MMA).

Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology (BSAT) is a three and a half year program with a total of 212 units. Graduates of this program will follow a global accountancy curriculum which is heavily computer-based and will be employed in the fast growing BPO industry. At the end of the program they also will be ready to take the international examination for Certified Accounting Technologist (CAT).

Master of Accountancy majors in Internal Audit and Taxation (MA–IA and MA–T) and Master of Management Accounting (MMA) are non-thesis programs with a total of 45 units each. These programs are targeted to accounting professionals who do not want to take up a thesis but want to develop their accounting skills and knowledge. Admission to these non-thesis programs requires an undergraduate degree in Accounting (BSA), Management Accounting (BSMA) or Commerce (BSC).

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

This program is intended for civil engineers who have had some professional experience in the academe and in the industry and fresh graduates in the bachelors degree in civil engineering who seek to upgrade themselves in the area of water resources and environment and be able to contribute to the solutions to regional and national problems related to this field of specialization and to acquire a deeper understanding of engineering principles in this area of specialization.

Master of Science in Civil Engineering Major in Water Resources and Environment

The MSCEW program takes two years to complete and include introductory courses in mathematics, major courses in water resources and environment and thesis research. Based on the concept of integrated water resources management, the courses and thesis research cover engineering, economic, legal as well as social aspects of water resources and environment. Management tools and the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are included in the curriculum.

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (BSChE)

The five-year program is designed to emphasize a more practice-oriented learning process. Laboratory practicals, industrial exposure and integrative projects make up about one-third of the program credits; the rest are academic courses designed to thoroughly prepare the students for the diverse challenges of the profession. The program has a PAASCU-Level III accreditation.

Master of Science in Chemical Engineering (MSChE)

The program is oriented towards a specialization in biochemical engineering. It is designed to develop in the students an integrated understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes in the biosynthesis and transport of a product molecule. Upon graduation, students would have been skilled in developing and applying concepts that will lead to improvements or innovations in the upstream and downstream processing of commercially important compounds that are of biological origin. In the program, the student has the opportunity to develop a research thesis in one of the department’s three focus areas of research: bioconversions engineering, bioseparations engineering, and biological wastewater treatment engineering. The program is best taken full-time and would take a minimum of two years to complete.

Master of Engineering major in Chemical Engineering (MEngChE)

The program is the non-thesis version of the MSChE program; the thesis and industry internship requirements in the latter program are substituted with core and discipline related courses. This part-time program can be completed in only two years and a half if a student would enroll full-time during two summer terms; otherwise, the study will require a minimum of three years to complete.

Short Trainings and Programs

Review Program for Chemical Engineer Licensure Examination

The program services those graduates who are qualified to take the chemical engineering licensure examination given by the Philippine Professional Regulations Commission twice every year. It consists of lectures and refresher tests organized according to the three examination areas: Chemical and Physical Principles, Chemical Engineering Principles and General Engineering. A three-day mock examination caps the entire program. The pool of review instructors is composed of experienced faculty members coming from the chemical engineering department and the other USC departments of chemistry, physics, industrial engineering and civil engineering. The review sessions run from January to April and from June to October.

Workshop for Chemical Engineering Laboratory Instructors

The six-day workshop aims to: (a) provide adequate preparation for the non-USC instructors who intend to require their students to do off-campus experiments in the USC chemical engineering laboratories, (b) assist future instructors in designing and implementing practical laboratory experiments for the demonstration of some fundamental concepts and unit operations in chemical engineering, (c) facilitate the sharing of instructors’ experiences in the handling of ChE laboratory courses, and (d) facilitate the formulation of innovative ideas on how to optimize the learning of concepts and skills by a student in the laboratory.

BIO+ Training Series: Basic Laboratory Fermentation Training

The two-day training aims to address the needs of chemical engineers who wish to learn the basics or update their skills in operating a laboratory fermenter. The participants should preferably have a basic background on microbiology and biochemistry prior to the course.

The lecture part of the training introduces the participants to the basic aspects of fermentation processes: choice of appropriate microorganism and substrate in order to produce a particular fermentation product, nutritional requirements and growth conditions for favorable microbial reproduction, main modes of fermentation operation and the application of these modes in certain physiological or fermentation studies, and the important parts of a fermentation system.

The practical part of the training is done in the laboratory where the participants carry out the basic steps in doing a fermentation experiment including preparation of culture media, sterilization, fermenter operation, sampling, data gathering and data processing.

BIO+ Training Series: Fundamentals of Bioprocess Engineering

This four-day course primarily deals with the fundamental aspects of biochemical processes. The series of lectures and exercises focus on material and energy balances involving biological materials (e.g., microorganisms), design of bioreactors, and recovery/purification techniques of important biological products.

The laboratory hands-on activities include preparation of fermentation media and solutions, sterilization, sampling, operation of the bioreactor, cell immobilization, separation of product by ultrafiltration, analysis of samples using gas chromatography (GC), and analysis of data.

BIO+ Training Series: Fundamentals of Biological Wastewater Treatment

The two-day training addresses the training needs of those who are involved in the operation of wastewater treatment facilities (WWTF) and those allied to the practice of environmental engineering. The lecture part of the training focuses on the following topics: fundamental concepts in biological wastewater treatment, biological treatment process (applicability and limitations), troubleshooting in anaerobic and anaerobic treatment reactors, and WWTF monitoring parameters. An actual performance monitoring and evaluation of two laboratory-scale reactors (activated sludge and UASB) is built into the training program.
