Law asst dean selected to participate in US leadership training

Joan S. Largo, Ll.B., Ll.M., Assistant to the Dean of the College of Law, will leave for a month–long skills development training at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies in Northern Illinois University (NIU), Dekalb, Illinois, USA.

The training will be held from June 1–28, 2008 and brings together 30 multi-sectoral leaders in Philippine government, NGOs, and the private sector. Atty. Largo is one of those selected from almost 200 applicants nationwide.

The project is called “Cultural Citizens and North-South Dialogue: Building the National Identity and Civic Participation in the Philippines” and is part of an ongoing partnership between NIU and the International Visitors Program (IVP)–Philippines.

Majority–minority relations is the focus of the program and applicants were recruited from the north (especially the Cordillera Administrative Region), the central part of the country, and the southern region (especially the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao). Priority was given to applicants who are leaders of youth organizations or others who are in a position to influence the next generation.

The project aims to promote mutual understanding and partnerships between professionals in the United States and the Philippines through dialogue. It also intends to help the participants develop an appreciation for American governmental and legal structures and an understanding of the diversity of American society and strengthen their capacity for citizen participation and volunteerism.
