Barely two weeks after a Nobel laureate took its podium to give a lecture, the College of Architecture and Fine Arts Theater became the venue last 23 January evening for another high profile, though less highbrow, event--this time a showbiz talk show on national TV.
Celebrity host Boy Abunda interviewed Pilita Corrales, Chanda Romero, and Michael de Mesa, respectively for the three pilot episodes of "Inside the Cinema," the new talk show on cable TV's Cinema One channel.
Hosted by Abunda, the magazine program features local film legends, or actors and movie directors who contributed to the growth of Philippine cinema. It is directed by young independent filmmaker Oscar Nava.
This accounts for the presence of film class instructors and students, local independent filmmakers, and, of course, starstruck fans during the show.
Though the actual interviews proved to be a delightful exchange of wit, the audience had to bear with watching the crew finalize stage set up and other technical requirements, which took about an hour before cameras could finally roll.
Thus when a glitch occurred in the sound system at the start of the show, the Ateneo-educated show host gave the young, film-savvy crowd an impromptu lecture on hosting. This added an academic air to what could otherwise be a mere spectacle of glitz and glamour.
