University of San Carlos Parents Portal
University of San Carlos Parents Portal. The University of San Carlos Parents Portal is an online facility that allows parents of students currently enrolled with us to access the official records of their sons and/or daughters online. Parents need not go anymore to the University to inquire about the grades, assessment or payment dues, class schedules and other matters they need to know about their children in as much as the necessary information could already be accessed from the convenience of either the home, office or an internet cafe.
For this purpose, parents are advised to register online. Kindly follow the registration procedures as well as the procedures for accessing the USC Parents Portal.

Phil Gresham and Marieke Smit Visits USC
Phil Gresham and Marieke Smit are MSc. students from the Department of Human Geography, Faculty of Management at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Gresham is American with a background in anthropology and Smit is Dutch with a background in social work. Dr. Leny Ocasiones, faculty of the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and History, has been requested to be the research facilitator of the two graduate students.
Phil and Marieke are doing research on social and economic changes in the households of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and overseas contract workers (OCWs) within Metro Cebu. Data to be gathered will contribute to a further understanding of the effects of migration on household gender roles. The same data will be applied by the development organization Oxfam Novib in the Netherlands (part of the family of Oxfam institutions) which will result in two international conferences on gender and remittances, multiple formal reports, and policy recommendation briefs, aimed toward engaging the Filipino diaspora abroad.
In order to produce the necessary data Gresham and Smit have conducted in-depth, exploratory interviews with approximately 40 men and women who are immediate family members to OFWs and OCWs. Two USC graduates, Jeff Lim and Karen Dereche, assist in data gathering. Respondents have been found using snowball and respondent-driven sampling techniques and also through a radio guest appearance on DYAB. Using an extensive literature review and these new data, they are able to draw conclusions as to what changes have taken place in the household and how some prior conclusions have been overgeneralized, the result of which has sometimes been a gendered approach to development aid policy.
Phil and Marieke will end their Philippine research engagement and be going back to the Netherlands on 7 July.

Microbial and Enzymatic Removal of Ammonia and Nitrate in Wastewater
Microbial and Enzymatic Removal of Ammonia and Nitrate in Wastewater
Lecture-Seminar by Prof. Young Je Yoo (School of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Seoul National University, Korea)
February 8, 2011 - 8:00-11:00 am
Rigney Hall, USC Talamban Campus
For more details, contact the Department of Chemical Engineering (Tel. No. 3446783 or 2300100 loc 103)
Abstract of Lecture
Part 1. Nitrate Removal
Nitrate has lots of harmful effects to environment and human body. Many kinds of nitrate removal processes have been developed. Among them, biological method is the most widely accepted because of its economic and environmental advantages. However, biological denitrification process has some disadvantages. Since the biological process employs microorganisms, carbon sources have to be fed for microbial activities. The carbon sources lead to cost increase and secondarily, pollution of water environments. To solve this problem, a new technology was developed. Permeabilized microorganism was used as biocatalyst containing 4 enzymes – nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, nitric oxide reductase, and nitrous oxide reductase. The permeabilized microorganisms did not require carbon sources for maintaining microbial activities. The biocatalyst and conducting material mixture formed three-dimensional structure and this was used as a bioelectrode. The electrons for denitrification were transferred to the biocatalyst in the bioelectrode. High denitrification efficiency was obtained using this electrode system. The system is currently under pilot plant test.
Part 2. Ammonia Removal
Ammonia in wastewater or sewage treatment plant is to be removed. Usually, ammonia is converted to nitrate via nitrite under aerobic condition, and the nitrate is converted to nitrogen gas under anaerobic condition. A new technology has been developed to remove ammonia. One example: ammonia is converted to nitrite, which in turn is converted to nitrogen. A technology is being developed based on this process and employing the bioelectrode system. Another example is ANAMMOX technology by which ammonia and nitrite can be converted to nitrogen using anaerobic microorganism. This technology is being improved using enzyme engineering, details of which will be presented and discussed.
