Jesus Alcordo Gets Honorary Degree of Doctor of Technology on Energy Management
Engineer Jesus Alcordo, erstwhile Chair of the USC Board of Trustees, will be conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Technology on Energy Management by the University of San Carlos at the College of Architecture and Fine Arts Theatre, on Saturday, 12 March, at three o'clock in the afternoon.
Engr. Alcordo will be the 55th awardee to be conferred with an Honorary Degree by the University. The list includes former Presidents of the Philippines, a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, senators, cardinals, bishops, missionaries, educators, economists and businessmen. A consistent achiever yet a humble servant, Engr. Alcordo epitomizes the Carolinian ideals of integrity, excellence, commitment, leadership and service to community.
Jess, as he is fondly called by friends, hails from Naga, Cebu. He was a working student at USC where he earned his degree in Chemical Engineering in 1961. His parents, who were both educators, taught Jess the importance of service, dedication and industry. As a working student, he was elected President of the then Student Catholic Action (SCA). Later on he married Yolanda, a fellow Carolinian, with whom he has three children, namely, John, Margarita and Jerome. In 1975 he completed the Executive Program in Business Administration at Columbia University, New York.
Concurrently, Engr. Alcordo is the President of Global Power Corporation, Cebu Energy Development Corporation, Panay Energy Development Corporation; Director of Toledo Power Company and Chemical Industries of the Philippines; Trustee and Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors; and Member of the Advisory Council, UP Cebu Chapter.
He was immediate Past Chair of the USC Board of Trustees for eight years. He also held different positions in the power industry both in government and private companies, such as Commissioner of the Energy Regulatory Commission, Special Advisor at the Department of Energy, and President of National Power Corporation. He was Manager, Consultant and Engineer in the Philippines, Asia and Central America. In 2010, he put up the Cebu Energy Development Corp. to help alleviate the power requirements in the islands of Cebu and the Visayas.
